Looking for a unique travel experience that's not only enriching, but also adrenaline-fueled? Then, look no further! Here are my three reasons as to why a surf camp deserves a top-spot on your wanderlust radar:
Community Vibe
Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate, surf-camps offer the perfect blend of challenge and community. They are the best way to get a taste of the culture surrounding surfing, which is more than just riding waves. You bond with others over the fact you got ‘washing-machined’ by a wave, or rode it ‘like a pro’, and support one another through the ups and the downs of the experience. You be-friend people from various places around the world, despite language barriers, and learn about each other's cultures. Surf-camps offer various activities, too, to go beyond the board - from BBQs to yoga classes.
Personal Benefits
Surfing isn’t just a sport. It can also be seen as a holistic experience, which enables you to dive within yourself, and discover the importance of the synchronisation of your mind and body. From connecting with nature to learning the art of breath and control, you are able to cultivate a deep sense of mindfulness. Through guidance from an instructor, you gain the knowledge and technique necessary for surfing, but you also come away with a deeper knowledge of yourself and how to overcome challenges.
Discovering a new destination
I chose to do one of the Planet Surf Camps in Fuerteventura, Spain. In the midst of the cold temperatures in January, in England, I escaped to the winter sun in the Canary Islands. I spent a week on the island - surfing daily, meeting new people, doing yoga, sun-bathing, adventuring, and dancing in the local bars.

The surf-camp is located in Corralejo - one of the main towns in Fuerteventura. You can choose to stay in a private or shared room. I paid for the 6-day package, which included; a bed in an 8-person dorm, daily surf lessons, transport to the top surf spots, breakfasts, dinners, and all the required surf-equipment.
To travel to and from the airport you have to take two buses, or you can get a taxi (we paid 20 euros - for two people). Many of the attractions on the Island are actually quite far from Corralejo, so I'd recommend renting a car. However, there is a bus which goes along the road between Corralejo and Puerto Del Rosario, where you can hop off at the sand dunes, for example. Or, if you're up for it, then you can also give hitch-hiking a go, like we did.

Fuerteventura is the gem of the Canary Islands, with its rugged volcanic terrain, contrasted by its golden beaches (due to the sand dunes) and azure waters.
It's the ideal place to do a surf camp, as it has the perfect mix of relaxation - with its laid-back island vibe - and adventure.
